Link Building is one of the 'big three' elements that govern search engine optimisation. The other two being: keyword research and good content. In fact, at present links are a veritable gold dust with regards to search engine optimisation. In the first instance they are the means by which a search engine will find and index your web pages. So if an already indexed site links to you, then the search engine 'spiders' that crawl the web retrieving  all this information with which they calculate ranking will follow the link and 'hey presto' your page is indexed.

The second reason why links and a good link building campaign are so important to search engine optimisation is that they are also looked upon as votes – votes of confidence from one website to another.

This makes the life of a search engine a lot easier. If a page from an established and trusted site is linking to one of your pages then it will assume it must be worthwhile and deserving of a higher position in the SERPS (Search Engine Results Pages). The more links you have pointing to your web page, the more authoritative it will appear.

But wait. There is a flipside to this. You can't just go chasing any old link, submitting your site to link exchange programs and listing yourself in the dreaded link farms. The days of successfully employing such cavalier link building methods are long gone. The search engines got wise and stamped down on it hard!

Quality links are what count! Quality links from pages that are of relevance to your own.

It also pays to have a well-written, informative and useful site that people will want to link to, whether naturally or by request.
